Please note that initial sound examples are those where the target sound appears at the beginning of the word, medial sound is when the sound is in the middle of the word and final is when the target sound is at the end of the word.
A cluster sound is one where there is more than one consonant together eg ‘st’ in ‘STaG’ is an /s/ cluster. Some of the sound labels use phonetic transcription so see below for a rough guide:
- [ŋ] is ‘ng’ as in ‘ring’
- [ʃ] is ‘sh’ as in ‘sheep’
- [tʃ] is ‘ch’ as in ‘cheese’
- [dʒ] is ‘j’ as in ‘jelly’
- [ɣ] as in ‘biadhan’
- [j] is ‘y’ as in ‘yellow’
- [x] is ‘ch’ as in ‘loch’ and [xk] as in ‘ochd’
